Sustainable Princeton’s EnergySmart Homes Campaign has surpassed its goal of providing 100 home energy assessments to Princeton homes that resulted in an average 25 percent energy reduction and combined savings of $80,000 for the homeowners who completed retrofits to their homes in the past year.
In October 2013, Sustainable Princeton launched its EnergySmart Homes campaign to help local homeowners with energy efficiency retro-fits for their homes. Sustainable Princeton contracted with Ciel Power, LLC, a New Jersey-based accredited provider of home energy assessments and energy-efficient retrofits to carry out the campaign.
In a year’s time, 139 Princeton homeowners have participated in the campaign by scheduling a home energy audit that resulted in a report detailing recommended energy efficiency improvements. More than 20 of these homes have implemented the recommended improvements and have collectively received more than $80,000 in cash-back rebates and incentives that, on average, will reduce their annual energy consumption by more than 25 percent.
“We’re thrilled that we can now calculate average energy savings of 25 percent in the 20 homes that have completed retrofits. The collective savings of $80,000 are an added bonus. We look forward to the EnergySmart program growing by 100 more households in the coming year which will certainly help the town reach Sustainable Princeton’s goals of 20 percent energy reduction by 2020,” says Matt Wasserman, Chairman of the Board of Sustainable Princeton.
He added that the energy assessment process goes beyond saving money and energy and touches on quality of life, “I had my own home audited and added insulation to the rooms recommended. My kids are very happy now that they don’t have to bundle up to sleep in those rooms anymore.”
Home energy assessments will be available at the specially discounted price of $49 for Princeton residents through Ciel Power until December 31, 2014. Homeowners can qualify for up to $5,000 in cash rebates and up to $10,000 in zero-interest financing for home energy improvements. Homes built before 1980 typically benefit most from the EnergySmart program. Poor insulation in attics and basements and older equipment that needs upgrading are often identified as in need of improvement by the assessments. Customers can choose Ciel Power if they decide to make those improvements, or hire another company.
