SUMMARY:Author Talk: Henry Grabar on "Paved Paradise"
DESCRIPTION:What would you do for a great parking spot? \nHenry Grabar will explore how the pursuit of the perfect parking space has forced us to sacrifice affordable housing\, attractive architecture\, walkable neighborhoods\, and lively town centers in favor of congestion\, sprawl\, and waste\, weaving the parking fixation into the history of the postwar American city. He will also discuss his reporting on how cities and towns across the country are beginning to challenge this legacy of 20th-century car culture\, with surprising results. You’ll never look at a parking space the same way again. \nAbout the Book (from the publisher): \nParking\, quite literally\, has a death grip on America: each year a shocking number of Americans kill one another over parking spots\, and we routinely do ridiculous things for parking\, contorting our professional\, social\, and financial lives to get a spot. Since the advent of the car\, we have deformed our cities in a Sisyphean quest for car storage\, and as a result\, much of the nation’s most valuable real estate is now devoted to empty vehicles. Parking determines the design of new buildings and the fate of old ones\, traffic patterns and the viability of transit\, neighborhood politics and municipal finance\, and the overall quality of public space. Is this really the best use of our finite resources? Is parking really more important than everything else? \nIn a beguiling and absurdly hilarious mix of history\, politics\, and reportage\, Slate staff writer Henry Grabar brilliantly surveys the nation’s parking crisis\, revealing how the compulsion for car storage has exacerbated some of our most acute problems— from housing affordability to the accelerating global climate disaster—and\, ultimately\, how we can free our cities from parking’s cruel yoke. \nAbout the Speaker: \nHenry Grabar is a staff writer at Slate where he writes the Metropolis column\, with a focus on housing\, transportation\, and the environment. His work has also been published in Architect\, the Atlantic\, the Guardian\, Harper’s\, the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, and other outlets\, and he has produced podcasts for Decoder Ring\, 99 Percent Invisible\, and What Next. He was the editor of The Future of Transportation anthology (Metropolis Books\, 2019)\, and was the author of Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World (Penguin Press\, 2023)\, which was named a best book of the year by the New Yorker and the New Republic. \nPresented in Partnership with Princeton Public Library and Walk Bike Princeton \nRegistration requested with the Princeton Public Library

SUMMARY:Sustainable Minds Author Talk: Charles T. Brown
DESCRIPTION:In his new book Arrested Mobility: Overcoming the Threat to Black Movement\, Charles T.\nBrown\, founder and CEO of Equitable Cities\, examines why mobility is not afforded in the same\nway to everyone. Join him for an event where he will discuss how the freedom of movement\nfor Black Americans means confronting the harsh reality of White fear\, fragility\, and\nviolence. He will demonstrate how un-arresting mobility creates an opportunity not just for a\nbetter society for Black people\, but for all people. \n.\nHow does this relate to climate action in Princeton?\nClimate-friendly transportation\, like biking\, is critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our community. The Princeton Climate Action Plan has a vision that ALL Princeton community members have access to safe\, affordable\, low-carbon housing and transportation. To make that a reality\, our community must collectively ensure our neighbors of color can participate equitably.\n\n–\nHow? Well\, this is an intersectional issue and that’s where Charles comes in.\nCharles will be talking about: \n\nBarriers to bike access and use in communities of color\nWhat we should be thinking about when implementing rules or regulations to promote e-bike safety\nHow the four P’s (Polity\, Policy\, Planning\, and Policing) affect arrested mobility and sustainability\nHow to implement green infrastructure in mindful ways\n\n\nLabrynth Books will be selling copies of Arrested Mobility for Charles to sign at the event!\nPresented in partnership with Princeton Public Library and Not In Our Town Princeton. \nRegistration is optional but encouraged here.

DESCRIPTION:Three videos featuring sustainable homes on Princeton’s 2024 Green House Tour will be screened\, followed by a panel discussion with the homeowners and several experts in green building. \nLearn how your neighbors are creating healthier and more energy-efficient homes and environments with green building practices such as solar panels with energy storage\, rain gardens\, superior insulation\, radiant heating and cooling\, additional dwelling units (ADUs)\, and more! The 2024 Green House Tour is presented in partnership with the Princeton Public Library\, Princeton Environmental Commission\, and Sustainable Princeton. \nLight refreshments will be provided. Be sure to bring your reusable water bottle! \nIn-person tours will place Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more details and ticket information\, visit www.PrincetonGreenHouseTour.com. \nAbout the homes:\nLEEDin’ on Linden\nBuilt to and awarded LEED-Platinum status (highest-level)\, this 2013 home was one of the first residences in NJ to achieve that level and was designed by local architect Kirsten Thoft for her family. The primary environmental characteristics of the home are a\n39-panel near-optimally sited solar array\nGround-source heat-pump (& loop) commonly referred to as ‘geothermal’\nHigh insulation and thoughtful site-design\nThe result of the design is that the house generates 90-95% of all energy used for heating\, cooling & plug-load.
