You will then receive an email with an invitation to join the Challenge on the Step Up app and full challenge instructions. We’ll send weekly leaderboard updates and tips on Fridays to the email you provide.
You can register at any time throughout the month of September, but the earlier you start participating, the more total steps you will be able to log! Winners will be chosen by cumulative steps taken throughout the month of September (September 1-28).
You do not need a smartwatch or wearable fitness tracker to participate! As long as the app is open on your phone, your phone can count your steps from your pocket, hand, or bag without impacting the phone’s battery.

FAQ
Is it free to participate?
Yes! It is completely free to participate. The Step Up app is free to use, though it does have a paid version. If you have any questions or need assistance with the StepUp app, check the StepUp FAQs or email info@sustainableprinceton.org
Can I do both? Walk AND bike?
Yes! When you register, select Walk and Bike. You will receive instructions on how to participate in both challenges. Please note: your steps will count separate from your miles biked.
I own an electric bike. Can I still participate?
Yes! The goal of the challenge is to promote a car-free lifestyle. Electric bikes are part of this, and so we encourage all bike riders to participate!
What if I don't own a smartphone?
This year we will have a form for bikers to participate, and walkers who do not want to use the Step Up app are permitted to use this to log their steps as well. We will share more details with you when you register.
Why the challenge?
Sustainable Princeton encourages our community members to walk or bike to work, the store, meetings, and doctors in town instead of driving.
The benefits of walking and biking are numerous: exercise, fresh air, less traffic, and savings on gasoline. With a walk, you can lower your stress and your carbon footprint.
We hope this challenge will help motivate you to try walking and biking over driving and we can’t wait to see how many steps (and miles!) our community will take this September!
