Landscaping

Your business property has the potential to reduce emissions and support wildlife all while helping you save money and enhance your marketing. Here are some actions your business can take to help protect the local ecosystem:

Hire a sustainable landscaper

Check out our Sustainable Landscaper Resource List to find a landscaping company that can add rain gardens, native plants and shrubs, low-maintenance ground cover, or other sustainable landscaping to your property.

These landscaping businesses offer a variety of sustainable landscaping services. They are also registered in Princeton, which is legally required and ensures the health and safety of landscaping workers by requiring proof of workers’ compensation.

Sustainable Princeton is providing this list for informational purposes, and it is not to be considered an endorsement of any business.

Switch to electric-powered lawn equipment

If you maintain your own property, make sure to follow Princeton’s Landscape Maintenance Regulations and make the switch to electric lawn equipment.

If you hire a landscaper to perform this service, you should consider selecting a landscaping company from our Sustainable Landscaper Resource List.

Practice Sustainable Landscaping

Show your company’s commitment to sustainability to your customers with sustainable, low-maintenance landscaping practices:

  • Convert lawn to a no-mow meadow. Consider areas of your property that could be planted with meadow grasses. This will support pollinators and birds and, best of all, will save you money from reduced mowing maintenance.
  • Introduce natives & remove invasives. Reduce your maintenance costs with hearty, resilient native plants that can stand up to the droughts and floods of New Jersey weather.
  • Plant more trees. Consider whether additional trees can be planted. A study from Texas A&M showed that trees have a positive impact on consumer behavior.
  • Leave the leaves. Skip costly raking services and have your landscaper mulch leaves back into your property. This nourishes your soil and can save on the cost of fertilizers.
  • Install green infrastructure. Consider incorporating a rain garden or bioswales at the edges of parking lots and other low areas. The more stormwater properties soak up, the less chance of water causing issues elsewhere. Learn more about Green Infrastructure in our Explainer blog post.
