Strengthen Resilience to Climate Change

WHY: Climate change is here and we must ensure ALL community members are prepared for the impacts. Our mutual survival requires a connected & supportive community that can react in emergencies.

HOW: Facilitate strong neighborhood networks through our S.T.A.R. Neighborhood program and home resiliency through our Get Ready resources.

A More Resilient Princeton

Resiliency against climate change is essential to maintain quality of life and mutual survival.

Preparation actions that reduce a community’s exposure to and risk from climate change can also directly benefit health, particularly if these actions are focused on those at a higher risk. An increase in the severity and frequency of storms is resulting in more damage to Princeton’s trees, downed power lines, risks to life and property and costs to clean up after an event.

The increase in intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, mainly due to climate change, illuminates how important it is to strengthen and prepare Princeton for the future, with particular attention to its more vulnerable community members. Strengthening town infrastructure, reducing impervious cover, and developing plans and practices for stormwater management and mitigation are some of Princeton’s top priorities in moving towards a more resilient community.

Downspout planters are plant boxes installed at the base of a gutter downspout. They allow stormwater from gutters to flow through and be absorbed by vegetation. The systems temporarily store runoff and filter sediment and pollutants as water infiltrates through the planter.
